Start your table with a feeling, not a colour palette — because beauty is best when it’s felt, not planned.

How I Build a Table Around a Feeling (Not a Colour Scheme)

Because the best tables aren’t styled to match — they’re designed to make you feel something.

I don't always start a table with a colour in mind.

That might sound strange for someone who designs tablescapes for a living — but I start with a feeling.

Sometimes it’s calm.

Sometimes it’s anticipation, or a sense of intimacy.

Sometimes it’s that slow exhale at the end of a long week when you finally light a candle and sit down.

When I build a table, I ask myself, what do I want this moment to feel like ?

Do I want people to relax ?

To celebrate ?

To talk for hours ?

That’s where the choices begin — not with colour charts, but with emotion.

Once I know the feeling, everything else falls into place.

If I want warmth, I’ll reach for texture — a heavier linen, a deeper candlelight, something that feels grounded.

If I want serenity, I choose glass, soft neutrals, and airy layers that let the light breathe.

The magic of the table isn’t in perfection.

It’s in the feeling it gives people when they sit down — as if you’ve thought about them, even before they arrived.

So next time you style your table, don’t worry about matching everything.

Just ask yourself one question:

What do I want people to feel here ?

Because that’s the detail they’ll remember long after the plates are cleared.
